2020-12-05 · In 1944, Jan Gosta Waldenström first described and identified two patients with macroglobulinemia with symptoms which he attributed to elevated serum viscosity. This included a triad of mucosal bleeding, visual alterations, and neurologic abnormalities and was consistent with reports of increased serum viscosity in multiple myeloma previously documented between 1932 and 1937. Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia is named for the Swedish physician Jan Gosta Waldenström (1906-1996), who in 1944 identified a rare condition in which two patients experienced a thickening of their blood serum, bleeding of the mouth, nose, and blood vessels of the retina, low red blood cell and platelet counts, high erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and lymph node involvement. It is named “Waldenstrom” because it was discovered by Swedish doctor Jan Gosta Waldenstrom, MD, and “macroglobulinemia” because it creates excess amounts of an abnormal protein called macroglobulin or IgM. Waldenstrom, which is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, came to light in 1944 after the Swedish physician Jan Gosta Waldenström determined what distinguishes it from other blood cancers: large amounts of an abnormal protein, immunoglobulin M, that are created by the cancer cells. Waldenstrom cells produce an overabundance of antibodies called macroglobulins, which may build up in the marrow and crowd out healthy cells. Symptoms include vision problems, headaches and excessive bleeding. The disease is named for Swedish scientist Jan Gosta Waldenstrom. The Jan Gosta Waldenstrom Awards were presented to Ken Anderson and Roger Owen.
